The STEVAL-CTM010V1 board embeds two sensorless 3-phase motor drives, plus a single stage digital PFC boost topology, all controlled by the STM32F303RB ARM based microcontroller. The ST FOC MC SDK firmware library enables this complete hardware and software solution, featuring FOC dual motor sensorless and PFC CCM mode. The inverter stages are based on SLLIMM™ IPM series of intelligent power modules for compact, high-performance AC motor drives in a simple, rugged design. It combines new ST proprietary driver ICs with an improved short-circuit rugged trench gate field-stop (TFS) IGBT, making it ideal for motor drives operating up to 20 kHz in hard-switching circuits.

The PFC section is based on the STTH30AC06C ultra-fast high voltage rectifier and STGWT20H65FB trench gate field-stop IGBT.

The board embeds the 2nd generation SLLIMM STGIB10CH60TS-L and STGIPQ3H60T-HZ intelligent power modules, which are tailored to drive motors for compressors and fans in outdoor units. The STEVAL-CTM010V1 is therefore ideal for evaluating room air conditioner solutions able to meet new efficiency standards requiring digital PFCs, and any single or dual motor application with power factor correction.

This document describes the 1 kW three-phase motor control demonstration board featuring the L6390 high and low-side drivers and the STGP10NC60KD IGBT. The demonstration board is an AC/DC inverter that generates a three-phase waveform for driving three or two-phase motors such as induction motors or PMSM motors up to 1000 W with or without sensors.

The main device presented in this user manual is a universal, fully evaluated, and populated design consisting of a three-phase inverter bridge based on the 600 V STMicroelectronics™ IGBT STGP10NC60KD in a TO-220 package mounted on a heatsink, and the L6390 high- voltage high-side and low-side driver featuring an integrated comparator for hardware protection features such as overcurrent and overtemperature. The driver also integrates an operational amplifier suitable for advanced current sensing. Thanks to this advanced characteristic, the system has been specifically designed to achieve an accurate and fast conditioning of the current feedback, therefore matching the typical requirements in field oriented control (FOC).

The board has been designed to be compatible with single-phase mains, supplying from 90 VAC to 285 VAC or from 125 VDC to 400 VDC for DC voltage. With reconfiguration of the input sourcing, the board is suitable also for low-voltage DC applications up to 35 VDC. The STEVAL-IHM034V2 is a complete motor control kit solution, for the evaluation of STMicroelectronics wide product portfolio targeted at applications where it is necessary to simultaneously drive two motors in sensorless field oriented control (FOC) and perform active power factor correction (PFC) through digital control of a single-stage boost DC-DC converter.

Typical application is in room air conditioners (RACs), where this solution can drive the compressor, the outdoor fan, and the PFC.

The microcontroller unit is the STMicroelectronics ARM™ Cortex-M3 core-based STM32F103RC, which is able to simultaneously carry out all the above mentioned tasks. The board is compatible for use with the STM32F2 series, and with the ARM™ Cortex-M4 core-based STM32F4 series.Motor 1 is powered by the onboard SLLIMM™ (small low-loss intelligent molded module) STGIPS20C60; motor 2 can be powered by an external STMicroelectronics power stage, such as those that can be evaluated by means of the STEVAL-IHM021V2, STEVALIHM024V1, STEVAL-IHM032V1, or STEVAL-IHM035V2.

Simultaneously, the same microcontroller unit drives the onboard boost PFC stage, designed with the STGW35HF60W ultrafast IGBT and the STTH15R06 Turbo2 ultrafast diode.

The STEVAL-IHM034V2 can be used together with the STM32 permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) single/dual FOC software development kit (SDK) v3.2, and successive versions, and its compatible PFC firmware v1.0 plug-in, and successive versions. This user manual provides information on using the STEVAL-IHM034V2 board and its hardware features.

The STEVAL-IHM040V1 is a 3-phase permanent magnet brushless motor driver designed to drive the motor using either the six-step or field-oriented control (FOC) commutation technique. The board can operate from the AC mains from either 115 or 230 V AC nominal at 50/60 Hz or from a DC input voltage between 150 and 350 V DC. The board can supply a continuous output current of 0.5 A RMS to the motor.

The circuit consists of three main blocks, as shown in Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4. The digital control block uses the STM32F100C8T6 microcontroller to implement the control algorithms and generates the control signals for the power stage. The main outputs of the control block are the signals GAH, GAL, GBH, GBL, GCH, and GCL that are the gate control signals for the power stage. The power stage, second block, is a 3-phase inverter bridge implemented using the STGIPN3H60 SLLIMM™-nano intelligent power module. The SLLIMM includes the 6 IGBTs, gate drivers and level shift required to interface the logic signals from the digital control to the motor terminals. The SLLIMM also provides a hardware overcurrent shutdown and a free op amp used to scale and bias the current sensing. The power supply block uses the VIPer®16L to convert the high voltage DC bus to a regulated 15 V supply that supplies the SLLIMM and analog circuitry on the board. The 15 V supply also supplies an L78L33 linear regulator that provides the 3.3 V logic supply for the microcontroller.

Two firmware control programs are available, one for six-step and one for FOC that run on the same hardware platform.
