A demonstration board was developed as an example for Compact Fluorescent Lamp ballast. It is optimised for a CF18DT/E/830 18W lamp from Osram-Sylvania. Using the L6569 the circuit achieves preheat, ignition and normal lamp operation. The power transistors are two STD3NA50 500V-3W MOSFETs in I-PACK package.

The three sections of the board are an AC input rectifier, the half bridge inverter, and the resonant ballast. By changing the connection on the input mains, the ballast can operate either on 120 Vac mains with a voltage doubler rectification, or on 230 Vac mains with a full wave rectification. The input resistor R1 limits the initial inrush current charging the bulk capacitors.

The L6569 operates with a single 50 kHz switching frequency programmed by R4 and C1. Two fast diodes D2 & D3 synchronize the oscillator to keep the switching in ZVS mode. The control circuit requires 4.5 mA to supply the IC, the MOS gate drives, and the oscillator. Its supply delivers at least 6.5 mA as described in appendix B. The start up resistor also balances the voltage across the two bulk capacitors.

The MAX3287 shortwave or VCSEL evaluation kit (EV kit) is an assembled, surface-mount demonstration board that allows easy optical and electrical evaluation of the MAX3287/MAX3288 1.25Gbps laser drivers or the MAX3297/MAX3298 2.5Gbps laser drivers in the common-cathode configuration. Short-wavelength laser diodes (wavelength < 980nm) and vertical cavity-surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) typically require a common-cathode configuration. In the common-cathode configuration, the laser’s cathode connects to ground and the laser is driven at its anode.

When used with the MAX3287/MAX3297, the laser bias current regulates to keep a constant photodiode current (for shortwave laser diodes). When used with the MAX3288/MAX3298, the laser bias current is directly sensed and held constant.

This EV kit includes an extra blank circuit without components to demonstrate a small, tight layout optimized for optical evaluation.

The MAX3654 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a factory-assembled printed circuit board (PCB) that provides two circuit versions—optical input and electrical input.

The optical circuit includes the photodiode bias circuitry, an op amp for feed-forward AGC operation, and a balun for single-ended 75Ω output. Through-hole pads are provided to attach a triplexer analog photodiode. It is important to select a photodiode with capacitance and inductance in the anode and cathode connections as symmetric as possible for optimum linearity.

The electrical circuit is normally configured with a 50Ω input for use with conventional test and measurement equipment and a 75Ω output. The 75Ω output can be connected to 50Ω test and measurement equipment using a minimum loss pad. If desired, the MAX3654 input can also provide a 75Ω input by replacing R12 and R13 with 25Ω resistors.
