This reference design is a highly integrated circuit solution designed to provide protection to Li-ion batteries from failures of the charging circuit. The IC design continuously monitors the input voltage and the battery voltage. In case of an input over-voltage condition, the IC will turn off the internal power FET after a blanking time. If the battery voltage rises to unsafe levels during charging process, power is removed from the system. If the input current exceeds the over current threshold for a limited time, the IC design will turn off the output power. The integrated charging FET can regulate the charge voltage and current according to the control from the host. The design can also provide a voltage source with over voltage and over current protection for host controller.

This reference design, using bq24300 and bq24304, is a highly integrated design that provides protection to Li-ion batteries from failures of the charging circuit. The IC continuously monitors the input voltage, the input current, and the battery voltage. The design operates like a linear regulator: for voltages up to the Input Overvoltage threshold, the output is held at 5.5V (bq24300), 5.0V (bq24305) or 4.5V (bq24304). In case of an input overvoltage condition, if the overvoltage condition persists for more than a few microseconds, the IC solution removes power from the charging circuit by turning off an internal switch. In the case of an overcurrent condition, it limits the current to a safe value for a blanking duration before turning the switch off. Additionally, the IC solution also monitors its own die temperature and switches off if it becomes too hot. The reference design also offers optional protection against reverse voltage at the input with an external P-channel MOSFET.

This Near Field Communication (NFC) reference design provides a firmware example for the implementation of an NFC Card Emulation application using the TRF7970A NFC transceiver. This reference design provides a small number of easy to use Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) which allow users to quickly implement NFC Card Emulation functionality. The documentation, hardware, and example C code provided will allow designers to develop NFC Card Emulation applications with an MSP430 or easily ported to another MCU of choice. Sample Code described in this design can be downloaded from the design guide.
