This reference design details a power management circuit which is capable to be operated at a supply voltage which is temporarily exceeding the maximum recommended supply voltage of the DCDC converter used. The protection is achieved by disconnecting the supply voltage and disabling the converter during the overvoltage events. The implementation is based on a completely integrated step down converter circuit enabling a small total solution while still capable of handling up to 3 A at the output.

This reference design includes a complete power management solution for a standalone emergency call (eCall) system in an automotive environment. The circuit is supplied directly from the car battery rail. It also manages a backup battery to power the eCall system while the car battery rail is not available. It includes power path management which routes the available power rail directly to four DC/DC converters which are supplying the required functional blocks of the eCall system. The solution is optimized to operate at maximum efficiency while powered from the backup battery.

TIDA-00159 is a reference design for vehicles equipped with eCall systems which has the capability to enable phone calls to an emergency service center in the event of an accident. Customers can accelerate the design of their eCall systems by taking advantage of a complete reference design comprised of analog AEC-Q100 qualified integrated circuits (ICs) from TI. This design creates a robust, low cost solution that is scalable with flexible power operations which allows the system to be powered from the main car battery or the back-up cell battery. Note: TIDA-00159is the second generation eCall reference design and it replaces the previous version TI Design AUTO-ECALL-REF

The efficiency and diagnostics necessary for automotive emergency call (eCall) systems generate unique requirements for the audio subsystem, such as speaker diagnostics, and low power consumption. This TI Design shows how to use TI's automotive two-channel audio codec (TLV320AIC3104-Q1) and a class-D audio amplifier (TAS5411-Q1) for eCall applications.
