The TIDA-00281 TI Design is a 3-Phase Brushless DC Motor Drive designed to operate in 48-V automotive applications. The board is designed to drive motors in the 1-kW range and can handle currents up to 30-A. The design includes analog circuits working in conjunction with a C2000 LaunchPad to spin a 3-Phase BLDC motor without the need for position feedback from Hall Effect sensors or quadrature encoder.

An inductive sensing (LDC)-based event counting design providing a robust and low-cost interface for speed measurement and event counting applications. The solution doesn't require magnets and reliably operates in environments with dirt, moisture or oil that usually pose challenges for alternate sensing technologies.

Reverse polarity is standard protection required in an automotive environment. When battery cables are detached and reconnected there is a probability of connecting the wires to wrong terminals of the battery. This mistake could damage the components in Electronic Control Units (ECU). To avoid damage to the ECU there is a need for reverse polarity protection. Schotky diodes could be used but will have a constantly high power loss. This reference design uses the LM5050-Q1 along with n-channel mosfet to provide reverse polarity protection and reduce the power dissipation.

Automotive battery power supply lines are prone to transients while running the system. Typical protections required are overvoltage, overload, reverse polarity, and jump start. During the life of a car, the alternator may be replaced with a non-OEM part. The after-market alternator may have different or no load dump protection, which could lead to damaging the electronic control unit (ECU). This TI Design provides protection to handle these potential unsuppressed load dump pulses (12 V and 24 V) with hardware control. Class A operation may be attained during unsuppressed load dump pulses.
